Quick ‘Brass Band’ Profile – David Huxham (Chairman)
I am proud to be the grandson of one of the founding members and original Bandmaster of the ‘Exeter and District Southern Railway Band’, Lewis Huxham.
He, together with members of the, then, Recreation Club of the Southern Railway, purchased instruments locally and enlisted playing members including three of his brothers, one of whom, Lionel, became the first Musical Director. Four of the brother’s sons, including my Dad, subsequently joined the band and, as time progressed, grandson’s also appeared within the ranks.
In 1962, at the age of 7, I was given cornet lessons by Uncle Lionel and plonked well and truly on a 3rd cornet seat. I have played in every cornet seat since!
In 1997, upon losing my Dad to cancer, I changed to playing his euphonium and also accepted an invitation to play 1st euph’ with Tiverton Town Band, with whom I still maintain contact with many good friends made during my time there.
I returned to playing front row cornet with the Railway Band following a demise in its membership. At this time, I was appointed Chairman with a manifesto of raising the band’s profile and hopefully restoring the local interest by promoting improvement in performance to standards similar to those attained during its history.
With the appointment of Graham Eaton as Musical Director in 2015, I am pleased that not only have my ambitions started to materialise, our membership has increased as a result. I thank you Graham.
I now find myself filling what was, a vacant EEb bass seat and, surprisingly, enjoying it. I think I might stay here!
