I became interested in banding as a child, as my mum was solo horn player in what was then the "Taunton Silver Band". We went everywhere with this band. Later I started following in her footsteps by learning to play tenor horn in my early teens in the "Sidmouth Town Band" and eventually progressed up the ranks, playing solos on occasions, and numerous contests.
A few years later I went to help out "Honiton Band" and loved it so much I stayed with them playing soprano cornet for several years, playing many solos each year, and I now play flugelhorn with them. I also played soprano cornet with "Ottery St Mary Silver Band" for a few years. My three daughters all learned to play brass and played in the Sidmouth band. My son was a footballer, among other sports, so didn't play an instrument. My youngest daughter Louise has continued to play and is now playing flugelhorn for "Martlesham Brass", based in Ipswich where she lives with her family. My granddaughter Caitlyn is now learning the cornet with Honiton band.
I joined Exeter Railway Band 3 years ago, filling in on cornet and I now play 1st tenor horn. I have also spent the last year playing solo horn with Torbay Brass, after helping the band out last summer.
